Joseph Awaida, Raihan Dakhil, and Omar, their three-year-old son, went for a walk and collected candy on Halloween night without suspecting that it would end in tragedy. The family was run over by a driver who was allegedly driving drunk. The three of them were walking on the sidewalk around 10 p.m. when a 2002 Toyota Sequoia car suddenly hit them. The family was rushed to a nearby hospital but died from the injuries caused by the fatal accident, the Long Beach Police Department reported. A GoFundMe account was created by family members to help pay for funeral expenses.

The driver, identified as Carlo Navarro, a Long Beach resident, "drove over the sidewalk and hit the three pedestrians." Father Joseph, 30, died shortly after arriving at the hospital. His son Omar died two days later, and the mother, Raihan, 32, passed away on Sunday.

Navarro, 20, was detained by authorities upon arrival at the scene, where he was investigated for driving under the influence of alcohol. The man was later arrested and faces charges of drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter.

Official documents obtained by PEOPLE showed that Navarro was released on November 1 after paying a bail bond and many of his friends and neighbors have expressed their pain on social media and will attend vigils in his honor. May they rest in peace.
