Champale Anderson has six children and admits that it is sometimes difficult to pay all of her bills. However, the mother still manages to donate food daily to more than 100 hungry children in Saint Louis. Realizing that many children in her neighborhood came home from school hungry and did not have to eat, she looked for a solution. "I am the person children usually go to when they are in trouble, when they need a place to stay," Anderson, 48, tells PEOPLE.
The generous woman has been packing bags of sandwiches and snacks (such as chips, cookies, juice, and fruit) for hundreds of children in her neighborhood for the past five years. When she started this initiative, she offered about 15 bags, but word spread and today about 130 children come to see her looking for a bag of food. The woman leaves her job to prepare the food she donates. "They look forward to it, I cannot disappoint them," he adds.
The first five years Anderson paid for all the food he gave to the children from his own pocket, but after presenting his story on a television channel, he received donations to continue his noble work. Today he has four other tables full of food bags in other areas and he has the help of his aunt and sister to distribute the food to the children. "It is a sad situation," he says of the economic scarcity of the minors he helps.
While some of the parents of these children are drug addicts, according to Anderson, other families simply can't pay their bills and don't have enough money to buy food. "I can hardly pay mine but I am blessed to have a little extra money to be able to offer this to them," reflects the woman.
Anderson hopes he can infect others with his generosity. "This is our future and no one should go hungry," he concludes. "There is enough money in the world to provide this. If they can build new buildings, they can go buy bread, ham, and other things to help certain neighborhoods. And that is my goal, to be able to reach everyone.”
