A bus accident that occurred on the Panamericana Norte highway, near the Puente Ocoña in Arequipa, Peru, has left 44 people dead and 23 injured so far. According to local authorities, this double-decker vehicle derailed and fell into a ravine, causing the reported damage.
"Our agents along with firefighters provided support in the early hours of a traffic accident near the Puente Ocoña," the Peruvian Police announced through a message on their Twitter account.
The police reported that they are also in search of two babies who were traveling in this transport and were still missing. They also announced that, although the bus could carry up to 45 passengers inside, it apparently had an overload of 16 more people; therefore, a greater number were affected.
According to the report of the National Institute of Civil Defense, the accident occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday (local time), when the bus, with registration B9Y-956 and owned by the Rey Latino company, fell down a 100-meter slope. height.
While the corresponding investigations are being carried out, the passenger transport company has been suspended from its activities for a total of 90 days.
For his part, the President of Peru, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, has shown his support for the victims and their families; likewise, it has issued orders to carry out the pertinent actions for the benefit of all those affected.
"My condolences to the relatives of the victims of the traffic accident in Arequipa," Kuczynski said on his Twitter account. "Since what happened, all the procedures were activated for the immediate support of the rescue and transfers of the victims to the closest health centers for their immediate attention."
