It is one of the most solemnly celebrated days in Spain for its meaning of union and diversity. But this year has come with a good scare. During the Hispanic Day parade witnessed by the kings of Spain, Letizia and Felipe VI, one of their paratroopers suffered a spectacular accident that sent him against a lamppost. The abrupt change in the wind direction meant that Corporal Luis Fernando Pozo could not finish on the right foot.
The situation created moments of tension as can be seen in the images. The face of the monarch was especially striking, as she could not hide her concern for this hero of the day. The king, more restrained and controlled, was aware of everything and remained calm.
At the end of the parade, the kings and their two daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, came to greet the injured military man who could not contain his tears over what had happened. Moved, Letizia tried to comfort the corporal who had a broken face and even skipped protocol by touching his arm and staying to talk to him.
A gesture of humanity that has earned him points by giving normality to what happened today. The parachutist was picked up by a basket overhead transported by a special vehicle to later rejoin the rest of the parade. Fortunately it all came down to a little disgust for how serious it could have been.
