A special education teacher in Alabama has been accused of sending naked photos of herself to her students and sexually abusing one of them.
Lyndsey Sherrod Bates, 22, was charged with engaging in sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19, distributing obscene material, and having sexual contact with a student, according to news reports.
According to People, the teacher resigned from her position at Madison County High School with the explanation that she wanted to work in a "different area of education."
About five weeks after leaving her position, the teacher was arrested for allegedly sending photographs posing two students nude and having had sex with one of them.
According to authorities, Bates had sex in February with a 17-year-old student who was not part of his school's special education program.
On the day of her resignation, her husband - whom she had married about a year ago - left her and two days later she filed for divorce, which was consummated in July this year.
"He is waiting for the day that he can clarify this in court," his attorney, Robert Tuten told AL.com.
Under Alabama law, the minimum consent to have sex is 16 years. However, that state law does not apply to the intimate relationship between a teacher and a student.
If convicted, Bates could face up to 20 years in prison.
