A 41-year-old teacher was arrested Wednesday in Quito, Ecuador, after an investigation in which 10 students accused him of sexual abuse.

The accused, who the authorities identified as " Chuim Antonio Ch", was arrested at the Mushuk Pakari Intercultural Bilingual Community Education Center, located in the Calderón neighborhood, north of the Ecuadorian capital.

The man taught subjects from the upper grades of primary education and his victims ranged from 12 to 14 years old.

According to Ecuadorian media, the abuses were committed throughout the 2016-2017 school year, but it was not until July 2017 that the first complaints were raised.

According to what was indicated, the man deceived his victims, earning their trust with food and drinks that he offered them by driving them to his home, where he allegedly committed the abuses.

The prosecutor in the case, Mariana Huilcapi, explained at a press conference that an investigation was opened in April at the appearance of the first signs of complaints of sexual abuse, which were formally lifted in July.

The official also explained that the prosecution and specialists would give "immediate support to the victims in order not to re-victimize them during the investigation."

The first 10 formal complaints were followed by the identification of 74 other victims, bringing the number of abused to 84. Authorities believe the number of these will grow as the investigations progress.

As revealed by the newspaper El Universo, the suspect remained detained in the Northern Surveillance Unit of Quito, awaiting a hearing where charges would be officially filed.
