Four members of a family were drowned in India when they slipped on a dam while trying to take a selfie. The tragedy is even more dramatic because one of the deceased was a bride who had just married and drowned in front of her husband's gaze.

The events took place on the banks of the Pambar Dam, located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, as confirmed by CNN S Prabhakar, a senior police officer in the town of Krishnagiri.

The tragedy occurred when one of the victims, Santosh, 14, fell into the water, followed by the newly married V Nivedha, 20, Sneha, 22 and Kanniga, 20. The drama was even worse because the husband of the Young girlfriend G Perumalsamy, 25, witnessed it all. Fortunately he survived and was able to save Yuvarani Perumalsamym the 15-year-old sister of his now-late wife.

"They wanted to take a selfie at this point of the dam and they slipped," Prabhakar told the mentioned chain. "The water level rose when they were here."

According to a study by the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care of India, more than 250 people have died around the world taking selfies. Most of these tragedies have occurred in India, Russia, the United States, and Pakistan. The gravity of the situation is such that the authorities in India have marked the danger zones where taking selfies is strictly prohibited.

This case is reminiscent of another tragedy that occurred in July 2011 in which an entire family died after drowning while trying to cross a river during the monsoon season in India. The torrential rains dragged the five members who were captured on video, without anyone being able to save them.
