A tragic accident took the life of a 2-year-old girl who was enjoying a day of shopping with her aunt and grandmother in a shopping center in Orland Park, IL.

Little Alexandra Alexa Martinez was in the Akira clothing store when a temporary wall in the shoe department fell on her, according to the local chain WGN.

According to the media, the store would have placed those temporary steel walls to divide the internal space of the premises.

"It appears that two temporary steel walls, approximately 8 feet high and 3 feet wide, for some reason fell on the victim," Orland Park Police Chief Tim McCarthy told the media. "The temporary partition walls weighed between 75 and 100 pounds each."

At the time of the event, the little girl was playing with four other family children of hers, who were also in charge of the aunt and grandmother of the deceased.

After the collapse of the wall, a doctor and a nurse who witnessed him ran to help the victim and remained next to his relatives until paramedics arrived to give first aid, according to People.

Police department commander Eric Rossi explained that the girl was "unconscious" when rescue services arrived, according to the Chicago Tribune newspaper. The little girl was transferred to a medical center, where her death was certified.

"I think everything possible was done under the circumstances," McCarthy told the Detroit affiliate in Detroit.

The store was immediately closed and will remain closed pending the investigation of the event.
