What was a sports routine for Kyle Thomson, a 22-year-old from Des Moines, Iowa, turned into a tragic accident when the 315-pound weight bar he lifted slipped and crushed his neck, killing him.

The incident occurred at the Elite Edge Transformation Center in Ankeny, about fifteen minutes from Des Moines. The gym notified its members of Thomson's death on Facebook and called the accident "personal and painful."

The Des Moines Register newspaper recalled him yesterday as a young sports lover, who was graduating this spring from Iowa State University.

In addition to lifting weights, the young athlete played baseball and soccer. One of his former coworkers, Stephen Smith, who was his colleague at the Lowe's chain location, described him as someone extremely friendly, always with a smile on his face.

Ankeny City Fire Chief James Clack said when the weight slipped from his hands it crushed the young man's neck.

Investigations carried out by health authorities have indicated that deaths from weight lifting are rare, but that many accidents do occur in this practice. From 1990 to 2007, nearly one million Americans were treated in emergency rooms for weight-lifting-related injuries.
