Google today announced the winning drawing for its eleventh annual competition, Doodle for Google, which calls on K-12 students to use their imaginations to create a Google Doodle based on what inspires them. This year they were asked to create a visual interpretation of the theme: "When I grow up, I hope …"
Marking the second year in a row that a Latina wins the national award, the 2019 winner is Arantza Peña Popo, a proud young Afro-Latin student, Colombian resident of Lithonia, Georgia.
Her mother describes Arantza as very outgoing and always lights up any place with her personality. A local Georgia station interviewed her about her Doodle when she was named a finalist. She talked about the inspiration behind her Doodle and her dream of one day being able to help her mom do all the things in life that she hasn't been able to do yet, like travel the world.
“My mom was the main inspiration for this Doodle. She worked hard to get ahead and I appreciate all her sacrifices, said Peña Popo. “And also a photograph at my house of my mom and my sister when I was a baby. The photo is a symbol of the care and love we receive from it.”
