A mother was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of her three-year-old daughter, PEOPLE confirmed. Angela Phakhin, 29, was found guilty of locking her three-year-old daughter Maiya in a car and leaving her in the heat for nine hours. A document from the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office details that the mother and her fiancé, Untwan Smith, 48, had left the girl exposed to the heat for several days, apparently trying to cleanse her body of demons.
"After Maiya Phakhin's death, she told the authorities that she and Smith were trying to remove the lustful demons that Maiya had," this official document quotes. The couple moved with the girl to Sacramento, Arkansas in 2016. According to investigators, the three lived in their car.
"In a period of more than two weeks, Phakhin and Smith had exposed Maiya to extreme temperatures during the summer," the document added. “One day Maiya was left in the car for four and a half hours. On the second day they left her in the car for nine and a half hours, killing her."
According to the investigation, the mother had been warned several times to take the girl to a shelter and protect her from the heat, but she did not accept those proposals. Phakhin and Smith were arrested on June 28, 2017. Smith is still in jail awaiting trial and faces charges of murder and torture following the girl's death.
The little girl was found unconscious strapped to her seat in the car, covered with blankets. Rest in peace.
