A migrant boy was found Tuesday by U. S. Border Patrol agents alone and crying in a cornfield in Brownsville, Texas, near the border with Mexico.

"We believe the boy was with a larger group that was running when they encountered agents," the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) tweeted.

According to officials, the boy's name and a phone number were written on his shoes, thereby identifying him.

The boy was taken to the Fort Brown border station, where he was under the supervision of immigration agents as efforts were made to find his relatives. The boy's family could not be located and, according to the agents, the boy "did not speak clearly enough" to say who his parents are.

According to a statement, the Customs Service said that the boy was "abandoned" by a group of people who "entered the United States illegally" and fled leaving him alone. The minor underwent a medical examination and was found to be injury free.

"The agents requested the assistance of a K-9 Border Patrol team in an attempt to search the field and, in the process, located a boy who was alone and crying," says the statement obtained by the BBC.

The child will remain with the United States Department of Health and Human Services, which will take care of the minor until his family appears.

In March, CBP reported that the number of unaccompanied families and children now intercepting at the border has not been seen since 2014.
