A 42-year-old Hispanic mother has been accused in Colorado of wanting to jump off a cliff in her car where her four children and two dogs were also traveling. The family survived thanks to the courageous intervention of one of the 13-year-old children who jumped out of a window to ask the police for help.

Jessica Dawn Garcia faces four counts of attempted vehicular manslaughter and four more counts of child abuse, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office confirms.

According to official documents obtained by People, on March 30, around 5:00 pm local time, police officers responded to a call to the Colorado National Monument. The request for help was from a boy who claimed that he had just jumped from a moving car and that his mother "was trying to kill him." The minor also alerted authorities to the presence of three other children and two dogs who were still inside the car and were on their way to the cliff.

Police then tracked Garcia's car, a Ford Fiesta that was standing in the wrong direction at an intersection at the west entrance to the monument. When they located the vehicle, it was about 10 feet from the cliff "with the tires facing toward the void."

On the site, the officers were able to notice the existence of marks on the ground that would indicate that the woman's car braked violently and then slipped, very close to the slope.”

According to police officers who came to the scene, the first thing the woman did when she noticed her presence was to say: "I was not going to push them." Right there, one of the children in the vehicle told one of them that his mother believed that "the earth is corrupt" and that she wanted "that they could go home."

García is in custody of the authorities and his bail has been set at $ 5,000. On April 16 he has a court date to hear his charges.
