An alligator more than six feet long was seen in a pond near a Florida elementary school.

The animal was spotted on March 4 and trapped in the terrain near Palm Valley Academy in the Ponte Vedra Beach area, People says.

Fortunately, classes were ongoing at the school site that houses about 1,300 students when they became aware of the alligator's presence. In other words, there were no students or parents in the area at that time.

The note in the digital version of the magazine explains that although there is a metal fence or fence that separates the school from the pond, the authorities and the community decided to take action quickly. The alligator was too close to school to let his guard down.

"When an alligator is seen in or near a school the protocol is to alert authorities so they can contact the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC)," said Christina Langston, Head of Community Relations at People. "In Florida it is not uncommon to see alligators in or around bodies of water," she added.

People explain that, unsurprisingly, news of the animal near the school spread quickly. Langston even told People that some students saw the animal. "Some students saw the alligator near the pond inside the fences …" he said. The People note explains that Langston wanted to make it clear that the alligator was not seen crawling across the path to school.
