They Kill The Mayor Of Oaxaca Who Had Just Taken Office

The mayor of a town in the Mexican state of Oaxaca was murdered in cold blood just hours after he officially assumed his position.

Alejandro Aparicio Santiago, mayor of Tlaxiaco and member of the National Regeneration Movement, died at the hands of two gunmen who attacked him while carrying out his first public act, according to multiple sources.

Aparicio had just taken the protest to assume his position in the main square of the town, an act that had been carried out without apparent mishaps around 10:00 am on Tuesday.

Subsequently, and surrounded by members of his team and a crowd, Aparicio led his first public act: a visit to the Tlaxiaco Drinking Water and Sewerage System (SAPAT), as reported by Voice and Image News of Oaxaca. That was where the subjects approached him and at point-blank range shot him, also wounding the trustee Perfecto Hernández and the councilor Clotilde Santos. The three wounded were taken to the clinic of the Mexican Institute of Social Security in that town where Aparicio died.

According to the aforementioned source, the suspects were two subjects, 35 and 45 years old, respectively, who were apprehended. Photos of the bloodied suspects circulate on Twitter.

On December 27, Aparicio published a message inviting the public to his protest that began at 10:00 am “Friends, in the Heroic City of Tlaxiaco on the 1st. January 2019 at 10 am I beg you to join us for the solemn session of protest taking as Municipal President, Trustees and Aldermen, his presence strengthens us. For Tlaxiaco, a government of character, work and results”.

For his part, Alejandro Murat, governor of Oaxaca, issued a tweet on Tuesday to express his outrage at the attack. I strongly condemn the attack against the Municipal President of Tlaxiaco. I requested a thorough investigation from the Attorney General and he informs me that he is already in custody of the probable author of the murder. I express my condolences to the family and the people of Tlaxiaco”.

Aparicio's death happens just days after the murder of María Ascención Torres Cruz, elected councilor of the town and member of the MORENA party, of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in Mazatepec, Morelos.
