In the 10 days before she was killed by her ex, Lauren McCluskey called police six times to report that he was chasing and harassing her, according to police reports. The 21-year-old University of Utah student was killed on October 22 by her ex-partner Melvin Rowland, 37, who had already been convicted of a sex offender.

The young woman reported that he was pursuing her obsessively after she broke off their relationship. McCluskey was found dead in the back seat of a parked car the night of October 22, 2018, after Rowland shot her in the head. The young woman had dated him for a month but he had lied to her, omitting her real name and real age. She also hid her criminal past from her.

After being chased by police, Rowland hid in a local church, where he was shot dead, CBS News reported.

McCluskey broke off her relationship with Rowland on October 9 after a friend warned her that he had a criminal history. Rowland was convicted of attempted rape and trying to seduce a minor online in 2004, the authorities report reports. She reported him to the university police when Rowland began harassing her, confessing to the police that she had paid him artfully for intimate photos of her on social media, as he had threatened her.

University of Utah Police Chief Dale Brophy said at a press conference that there was a detective assigned to Lauren's case who was investigating the accused. Rowland had been released from prison in April and was on probation when he killed the young woman.

On October 19, McCluskey called 911 for help because he said that university authorities were not doing enough. On December 20, the girl's parents, Jill and Matthew McCluskey, told the Salt Lake Tribune newspaper that they believed the murder of their daughter could have been prevented.
