Julián Castro announced today through his social networks that he is exploring a candidacy for the country's presidency for 2020.
“As a child growing up on the west side of San Antonio, I never thought that one day I would be announcing this. I am exploring a candidacy to be President of the United States in 2020,”the Democrat politician, who served as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Barack Obama from 2014 to 2017, said in his Twitter message.
In his message, Castro, whose grandmother came to the United States from Mexico at just 7 years old, explains that like many he believes in the potential of the United States. In addition, she explained that her grandmother arrived without mom or dad, was unable to finish school and worked all her life in different jobs as a babysitter, cook and a domestic worker. Castro relates that his grandmother and mother, both single mothers, instilled in him and his brother Joaquín the importance of studying and helping their community.
"Two generations after my grandmother came to this country, Joaquin became a member of the United States Congress, while I worked in President Obama's cabinet. That is the potential of the United States, "he said.
In his trips within the country, Castro affirms that he has noticed a common denominator among the population: the desire to have "a good job, good medical care and good education for our children …". He even said the goal is to leave great-grandchildren a planet with "clean air and clean water" and a fair judicial system. “Many have asked me to consider running for president. I want to thank everyone who has supported me. I want you to be the first to know that this morning I am going to create a committee to explore my candidacy for President of the United States in 2020… On January 12 I will announce my plans,”Castro said.
