A 23-year-old student who was president of a fraternity at a Texas Christian university has been released after posting bail for a networked petition for the judge to change his verdict. So far, this petition has accumulated 45,000 signatures.

For her part, Hillary LaBorde, the district attorney in charge of the case, addressed the controversy through a letter where she assures that the verdict is "the best solution."

"There is conflicting evidence and testimony in this case that make it difficult to prove the original allegation without question," LABorde said in the document released by People. “As a lawyer, my goal is for there to be no more victims. I believe this is accomplished when there is a consequence rather than a conviction. This criminal is now on probation and will receive treatment for his offenses, which was not guaranteed if he had gone to trial."
