The search for little Darnell Gray, 4, who went missing from his Missouri home last week, ended in tragedy. The boy's body was found by a search team, Jefferson City Police Lt. David Williams announced Tuesday.

Darnell was reported missing last Thursday after the boy was not found at his home, according to a police statement obtained by PEOPLE. Authorities initially said they believed Darnell had wandered home alone in the middle of the night.

The boy apparently did not die from straying alone, Williams said. How the little boy died is still unclear. An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death and help investigators in the case solve the mystery. The FBI is assisting police in the case, which Williams says has been billed as "the investigation of a death."

On Monday, Darnell's mother asked for answers. “I am asking everyone if you please have any information about my son, please tell me. Please, please, please,”the desperate mother told the Jefferson City News Tribune. The identity of the boy's mother has not been revealed.

A woman who has a romantic relationship with the boy's father and was caring for him the night he disappeared from the home, told police that the 4-year-old boy had disappeared from his room on Wednesday night while his father was working, Williams reported.

Williams declined to disclose where the body was found and they continue to search for answers in the mysterious case.
