President Donald Trump has made it very clear that he will not stand still in the face of the advance of a massive caravan of Central American migrants that left Honduras earlier in the week and is moving towards the Mexican border with the United States.
Now, the 72-year-old president is threatening to close the border with the help of the army if Mexico does nothing to stop the passage of the Viacrucis Migrante group, as the movement calls itself.
In addition to stopping all payments to these countries that seem to have little control over their population, I must, in the strongest possible terms, ask Mexico to stop this massacre and that if they are unable to do so, I am going to call the Army of United States and I WILL CLOSE THE SOUTHERN BORDER!”Exclaimed the president through a tweet published early this Thursday.
The message comes after Trump on Tuesday threatened to cut off all kinds of monetary aid to Honduras. "The United States has vigorously let the President of Honduras know that if the large caravan headed for the United States is not stopped and brought back to Honduras, there will be no more money or aid for Honduras with immediate effect!" Trump said. in a tweet.
The caravan left last October 12 from San Pedro Sula, capital of the Central American country. On foot and in cars, its members headed towards Guatemala to go to Mexico. According to reports, the federal government of Mexico sent two 727 planes to the state of Chiapas loaded with elements of the Mexican army to monitor the passage of migrants and provide them with security, but not to stop them.
For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Luis Videgaray, assured that the organizers of the caravan had provided the information "required" by the Mexican government to allow migrants to enter the territory and to carry out the application process for refuge, if required.
When the caravan started about 1,500 participants were reported, but according to current calculations there are approximately 4,000 people in the group that continues its advance north.
The crisis arises on the eve of the trip that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will make to Mexico City to meet with outgoing President Enrique Peña Nieto, this Friday.
