A 20-year-old boy was arrested by New York police and is accused of throwing his 4-year-old brother off a roof. The young man is accused of throwing the boy off the top of a seven-story apartment building in Brooklyn, killing him.
PEOPLE confirmed that Shawn Smith, an immigrant from Guyana who arrived in the United States in December, faces murder charges for the death of his brother Shimron.
Authorities allege that about 45 minutes after the crime, Smith called a police car that was patrolling the neighborhood.
"Upon arrival, officers found the body of a 4-year-old boy, unconscious and unresponsive in the yard" of the apartment building, the police report says.
"EMS arrived at the location and pronounced the dead child on the scene," the report continues. "A 20-year-old man (brother of the deceased) is in police custody."
. Police allege that Smith confessed to killing his little brother by throwing him off the roof of the building. It is still unknown what was the reason that led him to commit the crime. Upon arriving at the prison and seeing the reporters outside, Smith told them, "I have finally become a criminal." Smith will have to stand trial.
