It was a completely unexpected discovery for the three police officers from the town of Enfield, North Carolina, who went to Donna Sue Hudgins' house to find out what had happened to her mother's remains.

The answer to the mystery was in the residence of the 69-year-old woman, where the police found the body in an advanced state of decomposition of her 93-year-old mother, who had been dead for several months, according to authorities.

"Detectives questioned Hudgins and found out that he did not report the death because he was curious and wanted to see the different stages of the death," the Enfield Police Department explained on its Facebook page.

The mystery that the defendant kept began to be solved when Hudgins herself went to a funeral parlor to carry out the necessary procedures to celebrate the funeral services, but alleged that she did not know where the emergency services had taken the body after the death occurred that same day.

Puzzled, the funeral home workers began searching for the body, but realizing that they couldn't locate it, they alerted the authorities to assist them.

It was then that Enfield Police Chief Tyree Davis and two of his officers showed up at the home the woman shared with her mother Nelley May Hudgins, where they quickly found the woman's body.

The authorities later found out that the death had occurred months ago and Hudgins had not communicated it to anyone, not even to his relatives.

Neither the neighbors of the two women found out what was happening in the house, although one of them recognized the local channel WRAL that it had been a while since you could smell a strong bad smell in the area. "I didn't pay much attention," he noted. "I thought it was the sewers or something else."

Authorities, who have not yet released the cause of Nelley May Hudgins' death, arrested her daughter for the crime of covering up a death. On her first court appearance, she was posted a $ 5,000 bond and will be required to re-appear to the judge on November 7, according to the New York Post.
