A woman who suffered domestic violence shared her story on Despierta América (Univisión). The woman, identified as "Carmen", spoke to Karla Martínezduring a segment on family abuse. "Was your life in danger on several occasions at the hands of your husband?" Asked Martínez. "Yes, three times. I think the one that marked when I understood that I could lose my life was when he attacked me because he was being unfaithful and I had told him that the day he had proof, he was going to leave him. That happened, he took me to his mom's house who was on vacation and when we were in the apartment alone he said he wanted to talk to me. I said to him: 'We have nothing to talk about' and when I turned around he attacked me. To this day I don't know what he attacked me with. I only know that I have a wound on my face, that I woke up in the bathroom, I had changed my shirt and I was covered in blood. It seems that I passed out, when I woke up I had a wound on my face. I try to see myself in the mirror, he won't leave me,but he takes me to the hospital,”said the woman, who did not reveal her identity.

The incident happened two years ago, she says, but the fear is still in her voice. "In the hospital I lied. I said that they had assaulted me”, he continues. "She also had blows to the neck, pimples. They asked me questions but they let me go. I did not have the courage to take the stitches to the hospital, I took them off myself”.

When Martínez asked her why she lied, the woman replied: “I lied out of pity, I was very embarrassed because I have four children and we had many plans. We even talked about getting married. We already had an established family and had a one-year-old baby."

Did your ex-partner show signs of being violent? "He is a serious man, a man without vices, a man who works, but I remember that when I was falling in love I met his mother first and once I was talking to a boy, there was a family party and then he took me dancing and he was squeezing my arm. He told me he was jealous. Then when we were dating, he had no patience with me, he would get angry. He always tried to get me to follow him. Now I understand that those are signs and women should take it seriously."
