Anthony Bourdain, the chef and writer who captured television viewers around the world on CNN screens, was found dead this morning. Bourdain was 61 years old.

As confirmed by CNN on Friday, Bourdain's death was suicide.

Bourdain was in France working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series Parts Unknown. His close friend, French chef Eric Ripert, found Bourdain unconscious in his hotel room on Friday morning.

"It is with extraordinary sadness that we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," the network said in a statement Friday morning. “His love of great adventure, new friends, good food and drink, and remarkable world stories made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will greatly miss him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your daughter. and family at this incredibly difficult time.”

Bourdain was a teacher in the media, who with charisma, attitude and sarcasm told thousands of stories of marginalized people and communities around the world through his television shows and books.

Through his books and television shows, Burdain explored the human condition and helped audiences think differently about food and travel, as well as advocating and campaigning for safer working conditions for restaurant staff.

Bourdain's suicide is the third high-profile reported this week after designer Kate Spade and Inés Zorreguieta, the sister of Queen Maxima of the Netherlands.
