President Donald Trump is back in the news on social media. A judge banned the US president from blocking followers on Twitter, the social network he uses so often. Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald of the Southern District Court of New York was in charge of a lawsuit filed by the Knight Institute for the First Amendment at Columbia University along with seven people who had been blocked by her personal account @realDonaldTrump.
"This case requires us to consider whether a public official can, under the First Amendment, block a person from their Twitter account in response to the political views that person has expressed, and whether the analysis differs because that public official is The president of the United States. The answer to both questions is no, "said Buchwald.
Donald Trump is so active on Twitter that he has received the nickname "The Twitter User in Chief." The president has used the social network on several occasions to attack political rivals and make comments that have generated controversy. "WITCH HUNT!" He tweeted on May 23, referring to the investigation into the Russiagate scandal of special counsel Robert Mueller.
The judge's decision also applies to White House director of social media Dan Scavino, who has access to the president's Twitter account and can send messages from there.
Since no government official is above the law and because all government officials are supposed to follow the law once the judiciary has said what the law is, we must assume that the president and Scavino will remedy the blockade that we have considered unconstitutional,”said Buchwald.
