A woman and her husband accused of torturing and murdering a 70-year-old man, spent months gaining the man's trust to gain access to his money before killing him, police suspect.

People report that the man was killed and then burned. The victim, Kenneth Coyle, a Vietnam veteran, died at his home in Hanford, California, said city police said. People add that police captain Karl Anderson details that Coyle apparently died after being hit (trauma) and suffocating after being tied to his bed.

Anderson explains that the murder was macabre. Suspects arrested for the crime are Stacie Nicole Mendoza, a 38-year-old waitress, and her husband, Jose Mendoza, 36. Both are in the Kings County Jail on charges of murder, robbery, torture, putting at risk a minor and conspiracy to commit a crime, among others.

Anderson said the couple's three children are in state custody because they allegedly accompanied their parents and witnessed the moment when Coyle's body was being burned, People reports.

About the waitress's friendship with Coyle, the police captain reported that it was not unusual, because the old man was very talkative and tipped generously. On April 5 or 6, it is believed that the Mendonza couple went to Coyle's house and tied him up in order to obtain information from their bank accounts. Then, on April 7 or 8, it is alleged that they rented a truck, dumped things of the old man and his body, which they later burned in a nearby county. The victim's family is devastated.
