A woman who was burned alive by her ex-boyfriend will be able to testify against him at her own murder trial. How is it possible? Judy Malinowski, 33, died in June last year after two years hospitalized from severe burns. The young woman was set on fire in 2015 behind a gas station in Gahanna, a city in Columbus, Ohio.
Five months before she died in the hospital - after facing more than a dozen surgeries to try to save her life and rebuild her body - the woman recorded a video talking about the culprit of the crime. According to her lawyer, this could be the first case in which a victim testifies in her own murder.
Her ex-boyfriend Michael Slager was sentenced to 11 years in prison after facing charges in 2016 that included criminal assault and aggravated arson. Following Malinowski's death, a jury charged Slager with murder. If convicted, you could receive the death penalty.
This woman's tragic case inspired Ohio's laws to be changed, adding an additional six years in prison to crimes involving mutilating or disfiguring victims. Malinowski was the mother of two girls, who had to wear white capes and gloves to visit her in her hospital room. Her mother also stayed by her side for the two years she fought for her life.
