Bella Edwards, a 3-year-old Hispanic girl, died in New York after apparently being beaten by her stepfather. Her mother, Shamikaa González, regretted after her death on her Facebook page: "I am very sorry that I was not there to protect you."
The girl was found unconsciously lying on a bed in the Queens apartment where she lived with her mother and stepfather, Mark Jenkins, who was arrested Tuesday and faces murder charges.
Jenkins has a violent history and had previously been arrested for shooting a man in the Bronx in 2004. The man will appear in court and could spend 25 years in jail if found guilty.
The little girl's mother and grandmother found her with beating marks all over her body after leaving the girl in the care of Jenkins. Police have previously visited the home in response to calls for domestic violence.
An ambulance took the girl to Saint John's Hospital, where she died of the injuries she sustained during the attack. It is not known what could have caused such a beating.
The girl's mother posted a message on Facebook after her death saying that what had happened seemed "a bad dream you can't wake up from."
