Texas police arrested an Iraqi couple for the alleged abuse of their 16-year-old daughter, for refusing to agree to an arranged marriage. The case has moved public opinion because apparently, before fleeing from her torturers, the young woman was burned on several occasions with hot oil as punishment.
Maarib Al Hishmawi, 16, was reported missing in January after she was last seen at Taft High School in Bexar County, 18 miles from San Antonio.
"This is a complicated case," Sheriff Javier Salazar said after the arrest of Abdulah Fahmi Al Hishmawi, 34, and Hamdiyah Saha Al Hishmawi, 33.
"It all started as a case of a missing person, we had a 16-year-old girl absent [and] very soon it became clear that this was not a common case," Salazar said in a press conference released through the official account. from Bexar County Police Facebook.
“We began to hear reports of continued abuse and possible reports of an arranged marriage that would have led to her leaving her home. We found her safe and sound in mid-March. We did not return her to her home and she was in charge of the Texas Child Protection Service (CPS),”said the sheriff.
As we began to question her, we made discoveries that were downright disturbing. In late 2017 there were arrangements for an arranged marriage between the girl's family and a man living in another city. In the arrangement, $ 20,000 would be exchanged,”Salazar explained.
Throughout this period, it was said, the young woman suffered from "terrible abuse." "They threw hot oil on her body, beat her with broomsticks and even at one point suffocated her almost until she passed out."
When Al Hishmawi could no longer bear the abuse, he fled his home. When she was located - in an unspecified city - the young woman was under the shelter of an organization whose name was not revealed.
In a video circulating on Facebook, the victim's father is seen talking to reporters to deny his daughter's accusations. "It is not true. No one abused [her],”the man is heard saying.
The Al Hishmawi couple faces charges of continued violence against a relative and remain in custody. The sheriff assured the media that the man who planned to marry the teenager has already been identified and that it is "very possible" that charges will also be brought.
