The political landscape of Texas could give a gigantic change, since for the first time in the history of the state two Latina women could come to occupy positions in the United States Congress.
Judge Veronica Escobar and State Senator Sylvia Garcia won their Democratic nominations in their respective districts for the upcoming House of Representatives elections to be held in November.
As reported by The Texas Tribune newspaper on its online site, the districts where the victories of the two Latino leaders took place are predominantly Democratic, so their arrival in Congress would be almost guaranteed.
"I want Latino boys and girls to know that this is a state of opportunity and that it is a state that welcomes them," Garcia said Tuesday night when his nomination was announced. "You have to work hard, believe in yourself and that you can do it," he added.
Despite the clear opportunity to be the first Latina woman to reach the United States House on behalf of Texas, the state senator emphasized that this is not her primary motivation for running for a chair on Capitol Hill. "I've never thought about that … I've never wanted to be the first, what I want to be is the best," she assured.
For his part, after his victory in the primaries, Escobar showed the obstacles he had to overcome in order to reach this point in his political career. “It is really difficult to jump [into Congress] for a woman when she has children… much more difficult for a woman of color, because fundraising is an important component when aspiring to Congress and many of us have a limited network of contacts” he expressed.
Elections will be held on November 6 to elect the 435 members of the United States House of Representatives and these two Latinas could make history.
