The operation that, in 1993, ended with the death of drug trafficker Pablo Escobar, was commanded by Colonel Hugo Aguilar, who is currently retired. Now this former police officer has gone from being a hero to a criminal after being detained for money laundering, as revealed by the Colombian Attorney General's Office.

"There is no justification or support against the capital of the former official, and they evidenced high incomes in some of his relatives whose origin is unknown," Néstor Martinez, Attorney General of Colombia, mentioned to the local media.

According to this authority, the accused presented "unusual and accelerated wealth growth" for a total of $ 5.2 million, as a result of his relations with the defunct Central Bolívar militia.

"Through alleged commercial triangulations with some members of his family nucleus and third parties, [Aguilar] would have tried to legalize and hide resources obtained by his relationship with structures of the demobilized Bloque Central Bolívar de las Autodefensas," he explained.

Investigations into this former official began in 2017, after Aguilar refused to pay $ 2.1 million to compensate victims of Colombian paramilitarism on the grounds of not having financial resources. However, he was seen carrying luxury goods and owning a Porsche brand car.

Thus, the pertinent inquiries showed that the colonel had a total of 29 properties, many of them luxury condominiums; as well as various "high-end vehicles" and various bank accounts with significant sums of money, the origin of which is not justified.

The respective judicial procedure against Hugo Aguilar has already begun.
