A 19-year-old alumnus is the alleged perpetrator of the terrifying shooting in a South Florida school that has resulted in "numerous" deaths and injuries, according to authorities, who have so far not provided much more detail.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office, north of Miami, reported in a tweet that there were "14 victims", while the superintendent of the school district, Robert Runcie, assured that "numerous deaths" had been registered.

According to The Miami Herald, a source informed them that the author of the shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school in the town of Parkland is a former student named Nicolás de Jesús Cruz, who after carrying out the attack managed to leave the school and was detained in a townhouse in the neighboring town of Coral Springs.

Teacher Jim Gard, who teaches mathematics at the school, told the newspaper that Cruz had been identified in the past as a potential danger to his classmates after he made several threats and that he was prohibited from accessing the center's facilities with a backpack.

After the alarm went off, television images showed how the students at the center were terrified, some with their hands up, while a swarm of SWAT team members, police officers, and paramedics gathered in the area to capture the person responsible for the shooting and attend to their victims.

In an image that has become common across the country, not far from downtown, some parents of the nearly 3,000 students on campus could be seen eagerly awaiting news from their children.

"It's a horrible situation," Superintendent Runcie told CNN. "It is a horrible day for us."
