A man was charged with aggravated assault and three counts of assault with a weapon in St. Thomas, a town in Canada, after he assaulted a family of Colombian immigrants who was speaking in Spanish with a bat.

Sergio Estepa was last week with his partner Mari Zambrano and their 13-year-old son talking in Spanish in the parking lot of a shopping center when a man started threatening them with a bat, accusing them of being terrorists.

The subject later identified as Mark Phillips, 36, began insulting the family by saying that they were not from there, that they were leaving, and that they were French terrorists because they were speaking in French, although the family was speaking in Spanish.

Apparently he confused them with Canadians from the French-speaking region of Quebec, which on several occasions has held referendums on independence and in which a terrorist group favorable to separation has acted in the past.

“Out of nowhere, this guy started yelling at us. He called me a terrorist, I'm from ISIS, I don't know, maybe because of my beard. At some point he started attacking my son, and I went to the front, Estepa told the Canadian CBC network.

It was there that Phillips attacked him and Estepa ended up with a rib clothing and various bruises on his back.

Zambrano recorded the incident on his phone and the video has gone viral. The family stated that it is an irony that they have immigrated to Canada fleeing the violence of Colombia, and have become victims of such an act in that country.

Another surprise they got: people's apathy. In a time when the mall is so busy, only one person came up to help them. "We were surprised that [people] pretended that nothing happened," Estepa said.

Thanks to the video recorded by Zambrano, the local police arrested Phillips a few hours after he posted him on the networks and they are studying if it could be an attack of racism. The alleged aggressor was detained without bail.
