A terminally ill Illinois woman who was convicted last year of killing her severely disabled daughter killed herself last Saturday.

Police confirmed that 57-year-old Bonnie Liltz was found dead by police at her residence on Saturday night after family members called 911.

Sergeant Christy Lindhurst of the Schaumberg Police Department told the magazine that the death "is believed to be suicide" and noted that there is no indication of a criminal act.

He also added that they are awaiting the autopsy and toxicology studies to have more data.

Liltz was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in relation to the 2015 death of her daughter Courtney, who was 28 years old and suffered from cerebral palsy, for which she was sentenced to four years in prison.

He was currently on probation while the appeal filed by his attorneys was resolved.

Liltz, who suffered from terminal cancer and other health problems, explained to authorities that she decided to end her daughter's life because she did not know what would become of her when she was not there to take care of her. Both ingested an overdose of medications, which in the mother's case was not fatal.

Despite the fact that the same prosecution had requested that she be sentenced to a sentence of probation, the judge of the case considered that her action was not "an act of love, it was a crime" and sentenced her to prison.

Although he was still free on bail, the Chicago Tribune newspaper noted that the Illinois Supreme Court rejected his appeal last month and was therefore due to enter prison this Monday to serve his sentence.

According to the Tribune, Liltz adopted Courtney when the little girl was 5 years old and has been taking care of her full time since then, since she could not move or feed herself.

Allied to the woman, they assured the newspaper that she was a devoted mother who tortured her daughter's future, once cancer prevented her from taking care of her.
