The murder of Emely Peguero, 16 years old and five months pregnant, has caused a commotion in the Dominican Republic and has focused on the numerous cases of femicide that occur in the Caribbean country.

According to the forensic report, the young woman's body showed signs of a forced abortion and a cranial rupture. The causes of her death were internal bleeding from the uterus due to induced abortion and a blunt blow to the head with sinking of the skull.

"They killed her because they did not want her to have her baby," the victim's father, Genaro Peguero, told the BBC. "I didn't want to abort."

The accused in this crime? Emely's boyfriend, Marlon Martínez, and the young man's mother, Marlin Martínez, according to authorities.

Just a day after the young woman disappeared, Marlon and her mother, who is the deputy director of the Dominican Republic's national passport office, asked on television for the young woman's return and said they were appalled at her disappearance.

However, mother and son were detained after a series of contradictions in their statements, the testimony of the security guard of the apartment where they both live, as well as the security cameras and the texts that the young girl's father found on the phone of the victim.

“My daughter told her that she wanted to have the baby. She was already five months old and she knew she was going to be a boy. They took her away from here to have an abortion. They didn't want to kill her, but something went wrong. Maybe my daughter wanted to escape, said Emely's father, who learned that his daughter was pregnant a few weeks before she was killed.

“[Emely and Marlon] knew each other from a very young age. I never liked the relationship because the mother was always very arrogant. But my daughter told me that she was in love and that the heart does not rule, "he added.

The deputy attorney general for women's affairs, Roxanna Reyes, explained to BBC Mundo that this murder caused much outrage, since Marlo's mother was a well-known militant of a political party allied to the current government of the country.

When she was transferred to put her in the hands of the authorities, a reporter asked her about her alleged complicity in the murder and replied that she had acted like any mother.

Not only Marlon and her mother were implicated in this case, a man apparently received instructions to dispose of the body of the young woman who was missing for nine days.

Due to the brutality of the murder and the alleged involvement of an official, the case has caused a shock in Dominican society.

According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), an average of 200 femicides are registered annually in the Dominican Republic.
