In an unprecedented initiative, a group of the biggest stars in the world of Latin entertainment embarked on Monday on a flight to Puerto Rico to provide help to island residents affected by the devastating passage of Hurricane Maria.
Ricky Martin, Nicky Jam, Luis Fonsi, Chayanne, Gloria Estefan and Emilio Estefan, among others, boarded the Jet Blue airline Preciosa plane at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airport, bound for San Juan. The aircraft carried a shipment of food, water and other essential supplies that will be distributed to those affected by the natural disaster.
"The idea is to bring aid to the Puerto Rican people and at the same time make the entire world aware of the humanitarian crisis that is taking place on the island," said Armando Correa, editor-in-chief of People en Español, who is part of the humanitarian effort.
More than a million Puerto Ricans are without drinking water, without electricity, without food. In the United States, many have been unable to communicate with their families for more than a week, without knowing what conditions they have been in since the hurricane,”she added.
