An 11-year-old boy and his parents died on Tuesday in a volcanic area of the Solfatara di Pozzuoli, near Naples, southern Italy.

According to authorities, the boy entered around 11 am local time in a restricted area, when he apparently passed out from the toxic gases released from the ground and fell into a small crater.

His parents, aged 42 and 45, tried to save him, but the crater collapsed and they also fell inside. Their bodies were recovered from the bottom of the three-meter hole by firefighters, who said the deaths were from suffocation.

The couple's other son, 7, survived because he ran to get help to a nearby bar, where he was assisted by employees.

The family is from Turin, but lived near Venice and was on vacation when misfortune hit her.

"There was a small explosion, or the ground just gave way, and they fell into this hole," said national fire brigade spokesman Luca Cari.

The crater in which the accident occurred is located in the Phlegraen field, an extensive constellation of ancient volcanic craters frequented by Italian schoolchildren and tourists from around the world. The fields are extremely hot just inches below the surface.

The place is managed by a private company and open all year to visitors, who can go on a guided tour or explore on their own.
