16-year-old Teenager Found Pregnant

The body of a 5-month-old pregnant teenager, who disappeared in the Dominican Republic days ago, was found with mutilations and put inside a suitcase at the foot of a highway in that nation.

Emely Peguero, 16, who was Dominican by birth but of American nationality, was located this Friday, along with the remains of a fetus, as confirmed by Jean Alain Rodríguez, the nation's attorney general in a statement.

Tests revealed that the young woman's uterus was perforated and that she had received a severe blow to the head. Her disappearance and the details of her cruel death have filled public opinion on the island with outrage.

The discovery was made thanks to the fact that Marlon Martínez, Peguero's boyfriend and also an American citizen, had allegedly confessed to disposing of the teenager's body after panicking due to an abortion attempt that caused the girl's death. Such practice is illegal in the Dominican Republic.

The young man was arrested and although he had said that his girlfriend's remains were in a garbage dump, authorities searched the body without success. Later, the young man's mother, Marlyn Martínez, offered to confess the place where the body was actually located, which led to his arrest. Now mother and son are detained while the facts are clarified.

A third person was detained in connection with the find, for allegedly helping to move the victim's remains.

Bolívar Sánchez, special commissioner in charge of the case, said that the doctor who allegedly tried to perform the abortion on the young woman has already been identified. Your name will be revealed when presented to the court.

The attorney general told People Chica that investigations will continue to determine if more people are involved in the crime.

For his part, César José Hernández, a lawyer for the Martínezs, told People Chica that he has received death threats for defending his mother and son. "Both myself and my family have been threatened with physical assault and damage to our assets and property," he said.

Adalgiza Polanco, mother of the victim, had networked a plea to the community to help find her daughter. Under the motto of "We are all Emely" the mother fought until the end to find her daughter. "I know my daughter is not alive, but the least they can do is return her body to me so that I can mourn it," Polanco exclaimed on a national television network before the macabre discovery was made.
