A 10-year-old girl, who was a victim of rape and denied the right to have an abortion, gave birth to a baby in a region in northern India, CNN explains.
According to published information, the minor had a girl after having a caesarean section at the Medical College and Hospital in the city of Chandigarh. Both the baby and the mother, in this case the girl, are in a stable state, said Dasari Harish, one of the doctors in charge of the case, the news portal indicates.
Why was the girl denied the right to abortion? The minor had to continue the pregnancy and have her baby after the Indian Supreme Court rejected her family's request just three weeks ago, Hindustan Times explains. The court took into account the opinion of eight doctors and subjected the girl to an examination. Also, the pregnant girl was at that time 35 weeks pregnant. In the United States, a baby is considered full-term at 37 weeks.
One fact that should be noted is that the doctor who cared for the minor explained to CNN that she was unaware that she was pregnant. According to what Harish explained, the parents told their daughter that she had a kidney stone and that is why they had to operate on her. They even forbade doctors to tell her she was pregnant.
The note states that under the India's Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, the country does not allow abortions after 20 weeks, unless there is a court permit.
