One of those extreme challenges circulating on social networks put the health of a child under 11 at risk.

Jamoneisha Merritt suffered burns to her chest, back and shoulders after participating in a viralized challenge in which her friends poured hot water on her body, New York Police told the New York Post.

Authorities arrested a 12-year-old friend of the victim on charges of assault for allegedly dropping hot water.

The event seems to respond to the so-called hot water challenge, in which an innocent person is poured hot water on top. In other variations, the person voluntarily receives the shower of boiling water.

Merritt had been invited to a pajama party Sunday night in a Bronx apartment. While he slept, his little friend poured the water on him, causing him searing pain. He is now recovering from burns at a Harlem hospital, according to the Post.

According to Merritt's mother told local channel NY1, her daughter had been bullied by the little friend who invited her to the sleepover and poured water on her.

"He is very sad. She is emotionally disoriented. He doesn't understand why they did that to her. She thought they were her friends, "said the mother. "They told me they didn't want her. And they had been intimidating her [on] Snapchat.”

Jamoneisha's case joins that of other victims of the hot water challenge, which has hundreds of videos posted on YouTube and Instagram platforms. A Florida 8-year-old girl died last month of severe burns to her throat from drinking boiling water after being challenged by her cousin.
