Mexican Singer Murdered

This weekend there was a new murder in the world of Mexican regional music. The victim was the leader of the Wetland Band group, Virgilio Ruiz García, who lost his life in an alleged armed assault after a presentation in Salamanca, Guanajuato.

According to a Univision spokesman for the city's public ministry, Juan Salas, a group of drunken assailants armedly entered the bus in which the musicians were traveling to take their belongings, such as cell phones and musical instruments, among other things.

"There were around five firearm detonations, in addition to beatings because they wanted to get on the bus," said Salas. "When I opened the door of the truck, some musicians got out and escaped through the bushes."

During the assault, Ruiz was shot and had to be transferred to the general hospital in the city of Valle de Santiago de Salamanca, he died due to his critical condition. Other victims of the assault suffering from a nervous breakdown were also treated at the hospital center.

Wetland Band was planning to hold a presentation in Tetela, Puebla, which has already been canceled. The Oaxacan group had one of its last appearances with the singer Lila Downs in the concert that it offered at the Guelaguetza Auditorium in Oaxaca on July 18.
