The statements of the Mexican priest P. Tomás Herrera in which he affirmed that he always carried a condom with him “in case he needs it” have caused a great commotion in the Catholic community, in which there is debate about the caliber.
The priest of the Archdiocese of Hermosillo, Sonora, expressed himself in an interview with the Proyecto Puente website, defended his right to have sexual relations, although he clarified that until now he has remained “chaste”.
"Until now I have not needed it, but never say that I do not have to drink that water," said Father Herrera in his controversial statements on July 20.
As expected, the priest's words generated quite a few responses. One of the most shared was that of deacon Javier Gaxiola, of the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ, who shared his point of view through an open letter on his Facebook account.
“I listened to the interview carefully. I ended up disappointed and sad,”writes the deacon. I don't blame or judge you. You did not have adequate priestly formation. You ordained yourself a priest without solid preparation. Don't get me wrong. Sure you are a light. I do not question your academic preparation. You studied philosophy and letters, theology and anthropology. But you and I know that the formation of the priest is not only academic. Above all, it is the formation of a heart”.
Gaxiola demanded more prayer from Herrera, who has spent several years without exercising the priesthood and now works as a parish administrator for the town of San Pedro-El Saucito.
The deacon, in his letter, urged the "defense of life and love" and encouraged "pray more."
“[Celibacy] is a gift and you have to ask for it. Take calluses on the knees. I pray for you, father, "he said.
“You use arguments from a hot teen. You know everything, except theology of the Body of our beloved Saint John Paul II, the great, and Catholic sexual morality of Humanae Vitae, where there is talk of loving truly. Where love is contrasted with Love with a capital , highlighted Gaxiola.
“Where there is talk of communion, of surrender, of oblation, of sacrifice, of responsible fertility. But that, dear Father, either you forgot, or you never knew, he added.
The Archdiocese of Hermosillo warned through a statement that there will be "an investigation of everything related to the controversy caused by [the] comments (of Herrera)."
