According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Puerto Ricans and Mexicans living in the US have higher rates of chronic illness compared to other Hispanics in the country.

Puerto Ricans have the worst rate at nearly three-in-10 adults having a chronic illness such as asthma, hypertension, or coronary heart disease. They also were twice as likely to report serious psychological distress in the past 30 days compared with Central or South American adults.

Mexican Americans are right beind with one-in-five having a chronic illness but have lower rates of multiple chronic illnesses.

In comparison, less than 19 percent of Cuban American adults have chronic illnesses and about 17 percent for Central and South American adults.

The study found that overall Latino adults have poorer health compared to non-Hispanic adults. 16.8 perfect of Hispanic adults in the US have fair-to-poor health against the 11.9 percent of non-Hispanic adults.

Researchers feel that Hispanic subgroups have significant differences when it comes to culture, economics and attitude on health care stating, " Although the Hispanic population in the United States may share a common language, there is considerable variation among subgroups."
