A class, which was intended to show the safety measures that a group of children must follow on a boat, was transformed into the scene of a horrifying accident that caused the life of a 12-year-old boy.

The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Centerport Yacht Club, located on Long Island, in eastern New York. According to a statement obtained by People magazine, the boy was participating in the lesson with two other classmates that included sinking a boat as part of the demonstration. During the session, two of the students sat in an inflatable Zodiac-type boat - which has an outboard motor - while the 12-year-old boy entered the water.

At the conclusion of the demonstration, the 18-year-old instructor put the victim in the boat, but when the boat accelerated, the boy fell into the water and got stuck in the ship's propeller, according to what was explained in the statement.

"The instructor took the boy [up] back into the boat and practiced first aid until the paramedics arrived," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Assistant Justin Myers said at a news conference. There it was also detailed that when the child boarded the inflatable boat he could not hold on because that type of navigation has nowhere to hold on and that it was the impulse of the start that threw the child into the water.

The boy was immediately taken to Huntington Hospital, where he later died as a result of "serious injuries" to his chest.
