Mexican authorities are investigating how José Octavio 'N', who was held in a Mexican prison for the alleged murder and rape of little Valeria Gutiérrez, died in his cell yesterday.

The suspect in one of the crimes that caused the most stupor this year in the Aztec country, "was found dead in his cell on the morning of this Thursday, June 15," authorities reported. He had a rope tied around his neck.

The week the girl's murder caused outrage among Mexicans. According to CNN en Español, her father traveled with her on a bicycle and, when they were a few blocks from her home, he decided to place her in a public transport unit to protect her from the rain. He was closely following the vehicle, which suddenly disappeared from view. When he got to the stop, it was gone. Neither did his daughter.

The little girl was found hours later in that transport unit, but with signs that she had been raped and, moreover, that she was dead, as she had been suffocated.

The investigation led to José Octavio 'N', 43, the owner of the transport, who, when he saw the police, reportedly tried to flee. He reportedly had a history of other reported sexual assaults in the area.

On Monday, before his body was found hanged in his cell, a group of people had turned to the streets of the neighborhood with slogans such as "Not one more" and "No more femicides", thus asking for justice for the creature that had a so violent death.

For the time being, his horrendous crime will remain a mystery, since the suspect who carried it out died before his trial. What happened? The investigation is just beginning.
