A series of racist, sexual and Holocaust memes that were shared by Facebook will cost a group of 10 students who have been left without entering the prestigious Harvard University very expensive.

Students belonging to the class that was due to graduate in 2021 have been punished by the educational institution of Cambridge, Massachusetts, after discovering the series of images they shared, including that of a Mexican boy hanging "like a piñata."

"A handful of students who had been admitted formed a group of Facebook messages - at one time called 'Harvard memes for hot bourgeois boys' - according to other students," reported in the university newspaper, The Crimson.

"In the group," it was explained, "students sent memes and other images among themselves that mocked sexual assault, the Holocaust and the death of children."

The publication assures that some of the jokes were so wild, that they hinted that sexually abusing minors was "sexually inciting", while other posts made fun of different racial or ethnic groups.

A Twitter post celebrating the Harvard decision:

According to Fortune magazine, the private Facebook group where the exchanges occurred was founded in December by Harvard alumni. Subsequently, a group of students who had been accepted to enter the university next September joined the group, and began to share the memes and jokes in question.

The university learned of the exchanges through other students and in April contacted the students involved demanding an explanation of their actions, after which they revoked the right of admission.

"The Admissions Committee is disappointed to learn that several students in a private chat group from the class of 2021 shared messages that contained offensive (graphic) messages (sic.)," It was said in an email sent to prospective students by a school administrator. "What a disgrace that I have to contact them because of this situation."

Some protested the institution's decision, since the Facebook group was private. However, the Harvard regulations establish that at any time they can withdraw admission "to admitted students who show questionable behavior regarding their honesty, maturity, or moral character."
