David and Louise Turpin were not only abusive to their children, they also mistreated the children's pet to punish minors. Their 13 children suffered years of torture, abuse and malnutrition at the hands of their parents in the so-called 'house of horror' in which the family lived in California. The minors were rescued when one of the 13 brothers managed to escape from their home in Perris and called the police, asking for help. Kevin Beecham, a Riverside County prosecutor who worked on the case - which ended in the parents' incarceration - told PEOPLE that the Turpin tormented their children psychologically.

Her eldest daughter had to witness how her cat was mistreated. In the family's previous home in Texas, the parents handed over their older daughter's cat to wild dogs, and she was forced to watch her pet being mutilated. "They grabbed her by 'stealing' or taking food out of the refrigerator and the mom asked her to bring her cat. Then she put the cat outside and forced her daughter to see how these dogs literally ate the cat in front of her, tore it apart and destroyed it. they killed. " The girl was about 9 years old when she witnessed this attack on her pet, the lawyer reported.

Prosecutors said parents beat, strangled and starved their children - who were between the ages of 2 to 29 when they were rescued by authorities. At their home in Perris, CA, the brothers were unable to socialize with each other and were tied to their dirty beds when trying to eat food without the Turpin's permission. In 2019, David and Louise Turpin pleaded guilty to the charges against them - including torture and false imprisonment - and were sentenced to 25 years in prison.
