Texas police believe the body of a little girl found Sunday in a drain in the town of Richardson could be that of Sherin Mathews, the 3-year-old girl who disappeared last week after her father apparently punished her by removing her from the home for not wanting to drink milk.

Although the coroner has not yet identified the body, investigators in the case do believe it may be Mathews. A spokesman for the Richardson Police Department confirmed to People that "it is most likely her."

Last week, Dallas County police said the girl was last seen on Saturday, October 14, when her father, Wesley Mathews, punished her for not drinking her milk. The punishment imposed was that she stood in the backyard of her house, which faces an alley. It was 3 am.

Mathews says that 15 minutes later, when he went to see the little girl, she was gone. However, he did not inform the authorities of his disappearance until several hours later.

"As the investigation continued to unfold, more and more things came to the surface and we continued to analyze them," a spokesman for the authorities reported at a press conference Sunday. "This led to the search for dogs in that area, and that's how we found this body."

While the investigation continues, the deceased's older sister, 4, was transferred to a foster home. The court hearing of the father, who is free after posting bail, was postponed until November 13, pending the hiring of a defense attorney.
