New York police yesterday detained an octogenarian doctor on charges of issuing some 14,000 prescriptions for unnecessary pills and highly addictive substances even though it is alleged that he knew that many of those patients had addiction problems.
As reported by The New York Post, authorities estimate that the prescriptions signed by Dr. Martin Tesher, 81, would have generated 2.2 million oxycodone pills, which would represent approximately a patient value and the Canadian doctor - who earned almost get that addiction.
James J. Hunt, Special Agent with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), opined that Dr. Tesher "acted similarly to a multi-million dollar heroin drug operation, distributing more than family doctor, " prevented patients seeking help get substance abuse and turned new patients into opiate addicts by unnecessarily prescribing them in exchange for cash.”
Now the doctor, who was released on Monday after posting bail of $ 250,000, faces 20 years in prison for distribution of controlled substances.
