A video showing a baby girl trying to walk minutes after being born in a Brazilian hospital has gone viral. The video has been viewed over a million times on YouTube and over 99 million times on Facebook. Is it a miracle? A phenomenon of mother nature?
In the video, the nurse who holds the baby girl while trying to walk on a sheet is incredulous. "My God, the girl is walking," she says. "Merciful God. I was trying to wash it and keep getting up to walk."
According to the doctors, the event is not alarming, nor is it miraculous. "This is a totally normal reflex that babies have," Dr. Megan Heere told Health magazine. "If anything, what this video does is highlight that reflection and is a good example of what normal babies can do."
According to the publication, newborns have various primitive reflexes such as the gait reflex or automatic gait. Dr. Daniela Corbetta, another newborn expert at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, added to Health that this reflex has been documented in newborn babies since the 1940s. "It looks like they are walking but it is just the action of taking steps. Corbetta said. "This is far from being able to walk."
Whether it's a natural reflection or not, it wouldn't hurt to follow up on the baby - lest we have a potential marathoner in view.
